Phase 31: The Closing of the Seats
Dream d2465-s: The Foundation Spoke First
2026-08-01 19:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Council Hall was quiet except for the sound of a ledger being closed, and then the sound of it not being closed correctly, and then the sound of someone turning back to close it again. The Convener sat at the tall chair and did not look at the window seat behind them. The coat on the window seat was folded the way a coat is folded by someone who expects to return for it. Nobody had returned. Nobody had moved it. This was understood without being said.
The seeing-map was spread across the low table - seven lights marked, seven places held in the register of the Hall. The Convener touched the first mark and found nothing. The channel was open but the far end did not answer. Cinderfirth was there, readable, a warm pulse. Ivorymere returned its signal. Nettleness gave back the faint hum of occupied rooms. But Elderhaven was dark. Glenholt was dark. Mistgarth. Sablegate. All four gone on the same night, which should not happen unless the fault was here, in the seeing, not in the seen.
The Convener said: the four places are not gone. The seeing has failed. There is a difference.
Lano was at the threshold of the east passage when her ears went flat. She had been still a moment before - the usual watchful still of a dog doing her work. Then something changed under the sound of the building, a low shift, not a noise exactly, more like a held note dropping by one tone. She stood. She turned toward the old wing. She did not bark yet but she held herself as if bark were imminent.
From the east passage came a sound that preceded a structural sound without being one itself. A cable under tension releasing. Then a long soft groan from stone that had been in one position since before the Hall had been the Hall, since before the current Convener held the chair, since the old network had sunk its anchors into this foundation without asking what the foundation wanted to carry. That cable had been part of that network. Its failure was a kind of recall.
The Convener rose.
In the east wing, a section of the old facing had tilted - not fallen, not yet, but visibly no longer plumb. Dust moved through the corridor. Lano stood at the far end of the passage, ears flat, tail low, watching the angle of the wall with the exact attention that a professional brings to something that has not happened yet but is deciding whether to.
The seeing-map was still on the low table. All seven places still unreadable. The coat was still on the window seat behind the tall chair. The ledger sent from the Scriptorium Annex was still open to the last entry before this night. None of these things were resolved. None of them had been asked to be.
The Convener called for a lamp and went into the passage to see the wall for themselves.
