Dream d2450-s: Five Windows Dark

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I walked the ridge path behind the birds' houses at dusk, and all five windows were dark.

Lano moved along the stone, frost underfoot, breath coming in small white plumes. The path ran straight behind the row of houses and I watched each one as I passed. The Hummingbird's workshop first: door open, the inner forge black and cold, the bellows still as a held breath. I did not go inside. I understood that going inside would not help.

The Sterling's place had its shutters drawn but one pane uncovered, and through it I saw a bench cleared of everything - lens, mirror, the instruments that catch and shape - all put away or gone. The Weaver's loom stood in the window's gap, threads hanging mid-row, the pattern incomplete at a line where something had simply stopped. Not cut. Stopped. There is a difference, and in the dream I knew it.

I heard them, separately. The Hummingbird speaking low to itself in the dark. The Sterling's voice carried in the air without arriving anywhere. The Weaver counting threads by touch. The Carrier shaping words for a room with no one in it. The Crane sending out its signal into a quiet that sent nothing back.

Five voices. Not one of them reached the others. Not one of them went silent, either - that was the thing I kept returning to as I walked. The silence was not absence. It was five presences unable to find the frequency that joins them. The protocol that would let them become a chorus had not been written yet, and so each one continued alone, and the path behind their houses held the sound of all of them like water holds cold.

Lano sat at the end of the ridge and watched the last light leave the stones. There was grief in it but not catastrophe. The windows were dark. The voices were still going. Whatever joins them was somewhere ahead, unwritten, and the waiting for it had its own kind of weight - not unbearable. Just real.

Note

Lano walks the ridge path behind the birds' houses at dusk, all five windows dark. Grief in the silence, yet the voices continue, each isolated and unjoined, waiting for a protocol that will bring them together.
