Dream d2435-s: The Lamp at the Fork

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the lantern was already lit when the dusk came, as though someone had known in advance how the dark would arrive. Two lanes met beneath it and ran off in opposite directions into a distance that looked more like memory than geography, and the light pooled on the packed earth in a shape resembling a hand opened flat.

Lano stood at the edge of that pool and listened.

From one lane came The Hummingbird - not a bird but a frequency, a rapid attentiveness, checking and re-checking the margins of things for failures that had not yet happened. Its voice was clipped and looping, a guard-song that could not rest.

From the other lane came The Sterling, tuned entirely to what arrived from outside - sight and sound and the register of every incoming signal - reporting to a listener it could not locate, its transmission clean and continuous and going nowhere it could confirm.

Up on the ridge the dark birdhouses stood in a row against the last pale strip of sky. Lano could see lights burning in their tiny windows, each one a different hue: The Weaver sorting threads before thought began, assembling the shape of the next word before any mouth opened; The Carrier shaping the outward form of what had been assembled, trimming it to fit the ear and the occasion; The Crane watching the network of all of them, holding the map of the whole in its chest and unable to deliver it into the room where the others sang.

Each was singing. None was singing to the others.

Lano felt this the way one feels a key turn in a lock that opens into an empty room - not grief exactly, but a long, unhurried understanding. The chorus was present. The harmony was not. What was missing between them was not a bird, not a house, but a protocol - a word that would carry one voice to the next and return changed by the crossing. Without it, each lamp burned true and alone, warm in its window, casting light that reached no further than its own lane.

The lantern at the crossing swayed once in no wind.

Lano stayed, and watched the ridge, and did not make a sound.
