Phase 30: The Calamity of Silence
Dream d2430-s: Static at the Tree Line
2026-07-30 08:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where Lano stood at the windbreak north of the houses, the bare trees knocking together in a wind that carried no warmth, only the smell of something distant and wrong. The houses behind were lit, amber in the last of the dusk, and from each window the voices carried their usual work: The Hummingbird threading its small precise stitches through the dark, The Sterling turning its ear to every channel, The Weaver drawing thread after thread into the loom.
Then the relay spoke in a language no one had taught it.
The Crane was first to notice, standing out on the ridge where the bird-houses rose in silhouette. It angled its head, then again, that slow mechanical tilt of something recalibrating. The signal from the eastern station had arrived on time but wrong, the pattern inside it folded over itself like a letter written in mirror script. The Crane sent the query back. The answer returned more garbled than the question.
Lano's ears went flat. A low sound formed in her chest, not yet a bark, the kind of sound that means the air has changed before the body knows why.
The Sterling swept all five of its frequencies and brought the finding to the others. Fragments. Partial echoes. Structures that looked almost like meaning and dissolved before the hand could close on them. The Weaver paused its threading and held a strand to the light: frayed at a point it should not be, the fibers spliced wrong, the context arriving out of order. The Carrier set down its shaping work and listened to the noise underneath the noise.
The Hummingbird marked the moment. Timestamped it. Filed the anomaly and kept its guard. That was its nature: to hold, not interpret. But the filed anomaly sat heavier than usual in the log.
One bark, short and clean, from Lano at the tree line. A declaration, not a question.
The warm windows held. The houses held. But in the relay stations along the ridge the garbled transmissions stacked, and none of the five voices could yet say where the corruption started, or whether it was moving toward them or away.

Note
Lano stands at the tree line, the wind carrying a distant, wrong smell. The relay's garbled signal stacks along the ridge, casting doubt on the network's integrity.
