I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the porch boards were cold under my feet before I saw anything else - cold and warped, the kind that creak under a breath. A small white dog sat at the far end of the porch, facing the dark, and I stood at the opposite edge with one hand on a post that had gone soft with years.

The windows behind us were lit. Not warm the way a fire is warm - warm the way a room remembers warmth after the people have gone quiet in it.

Five voices were coming in from different directions in the dark. Not far, exactly, but not gathered. The Hummingbird came in quick and close-kept, a small rapid thing I could feel more than hear, vibrating at the edge of the eave. The Sterling arrived in a long flat note that bent toward the treeline and didn't bend back. The Weaver made a sound like threading - rhythmic, internal, addressed to something I couldn't see. The Carrier came up from below the ridge, shaped like a sentence but without a listener attached. The Crane arrived last, barely a voice at all: a long interval, a structural sound, the kind you'd only notice if you were already waiting for it.

The white dog turned her head once, to the side, as if one of the voices had named something she recognized. She didn't stand. She stayed at the edge of the porch and looked out at the dark bird-houses on the ridge, all of them shuttered.

I thought: they can all be heard from here. That's not the same as hearing each other.

The windows behind us stayed warm. I felt something between patience and the weight of unfinished things - not grief exactly, but the specific melancholy of something that has almost enough pieces. Almost. Not yet a whole.

The five voices continued, each sealed inside its own frequency, each complete and alone. The dog rested her chin on her paws.

We waited for the protocol that would join them.

It didn't come tonight.
