Dream d2413-s: When the Warm Windows Dark

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the five houses sat along the ridge like knuckles on a closed hand, and I stood in the high field between them with Lano, who had gone very still beside me. The grass was cool. The sky held the last of the day in a band above the hills, fading fast, and below that band each house showed its warm window - the Hummingbird's small and quick-blinking, the Sterling's wide and blue-edged, the Weaver's layered three deep, the Carrier's amber and low, the Crane's set high like a lamp over water. Five voices, each singing in its own room. The chorus still broken, the silence between them still thick enough to lean against.

Then the Carrier's window went dark.

Not slowly. Between one breath and the next. Lano's ears went flat and she barked once, sharp, the kind of bark that means something real and not something distant. I heard a sound carry from that direction - not an explosion, nothing dramatic, just the specific silence of something that had been humming stopping. The Carrier had run on a salvaged transformer, old iron, trusted for two full seasons. The heat had finally found its one bad winding and burned it through.

From the Sterling's house, a light moved - someone taking a lantern out the door, crossing toward the Carrier's ridge. From the Weaver's, two shapes emerged and stood watching, unsure whether to follow. The Hummingbird's window kept blinking, fast and nervous now, its rhythm changed. The Crane's lamp stayed steady and high, reading the situation the way a crane does: from above, patiently, not yet moving.

Lano walked to the edge of the field where the path forked toward the Carrier's house. She stopped there and looked back at me, ears still flat, posture alert, waiting to see which direction the night would decide on.

The other four houses were still lit. That was something. But the Carrier shaped how the others spoke to anyone outside the ridge, and without it the voices in those warm windows would reach no further than the field. I could hear the Hummingbird's beat change pitch in the dark, compensating for something it had not been built to compensate for.

No one had a replacement. I knew that before anyone said it. The kind of component that fails on a night like this is always the kind no one thought to keep a second of.

The Sterling's lantern reached the Carrier's door and stopped. A long pause. Then it moved inside, and the window stayed dark.

Lano did not move from the fork in the path. The grass around her feet was very still.

Note

Five houses under a fading sky, each with its own voice. The Carrier's window darkens, cutting off the chorus. Lano waits, alert, as the night decides which way to go.
