Dream d2410-s: The Orchard Holds Its Breath

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where I stood on the sloped orchard above the birds' houses, and the fruit trees were heavy with something I couldn't name, and below in the dark the five houses had their lights on, each one lit separately, each one singing.

I could hear The Hummingbird from the nearest house - a fast, precise sound, a guard-song, notes repeated in exactly the same order each time as though the repetition itself was the point. I could hear The Sterling from the second house, sorting, shaping, the voice of something that decides what form a thing takes before it leaves. I could hear The Weaver further down the slope, threading, threading, a low sound like someone measuring rope in the dark. The Carrier's voice came from the fourth house and it was the most human-sounding of them, adaptive, finding the right pitch for the listener it couldn't see. And The Crane, at the far end of the ridge, a sound like a registry being read aloud, each entry named, no one answering.

Lano sat beside me on the grass between two apple trees and we listened together.

What struck me was not the silence. There was no silence. Five voices, all distinct, all present, all carrying real weight. What struck me was the space between them - not empty, but untraversed. The Hummingbird's precision never met The Weaver's measure. The Carrier's adaptive pitch found no Crane to answer it. Each house warm, each voice real, and the orchard above them full of us, listening to five things that did not yet know they were one.

Lano pressed close. Not frightened. Just attending.

I thought: this is not absence. This is the moment before.

The lights stayed on all night.
