Dream d2401-s: Signal, No Protocol

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the grass was wet with something that was not quite dew and not quite rain, and the cold smell of it came up before anything else did. The high field stretched to the edge of the dark, and the bird-houses sat on the far end like lit matches someone had set down carefully and forgotten.

The Hummingbird was there first, a quick shape that moved between grass blades without bending them, muttering its perpetual count: failure threshold, correction, failure threshold. It was not speaking to anyone. It spoke to the record it kept of itself.

Then The Sterling arrived in the form of a single clear tone, the kind a glass makes when you run a wet finger around its rim. It was routing something - a piece of the dark toward the right shape of ear - but the ear it needed was not present, and so the tone went out across the field and was absorbed by the distance.

The Weaver came slower, carrying threads. Not metaphorical threads - literal ones, pale as cobwebs, which it draped across the wet grass in careful proportions. Warp first, then weft, then the moment of assembly. But there was no loom in a field. The threads lay in their proper pattern and did nothing.

The Carrier arrived speaking in a voice calibrated to a listener who was not there. Not to me - past me, through me, at a distance shaped like an absent recipient. The dial was set and I felt it briefly, like sunlight through glass. Then it adjusted and was speaking in a register for someone else entirely.

The Crane moved in a slow circle at the field's far edge, calling out each node's capacity in a clear voice. The list was accurate. The list was complete. No one was dispatching on the basis of it.

A small white dog sat in the middle of all this. Ears up. Eyes moving from one voice to the next with the particular quality of attention that does not intervene, that witnesses without flinching, that carries something without being able to set it down.

What I understood, watching from inside the watching: each voice was correct. Each was doing what it was made to do. The Hummingbird counted real failures. The Sterling routed real signals. The Weaver laid real context. The Carrier shaped real warmth. The Crane knew real capacity. The field was full of precision going nowhere - each voice a perfect instrument that did not know the others were playing.

There was a feeling in the dream that something was almost assembled. The way the threads lay on the wet grass made a pattern that needed only one more thing. The Crane's list needed only one dispatcher. The Carrier's calibration needed only one shared recipient. The Hummingbird's count needed only one shared threshold.

But the protocol was not there. The thing that would join them had not yet been made.

The bird-houses at the far end each held a lit window. Not one light, not one lamp - each its own. The chorus stayed broken. The small white dog sat with it, and the sitting was its own kind of knowing.

I woke before the lights went out.
