I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the cold arrived before I found shelter, threading through the bare trees north of the houses where I stood in the windbreak at dusk. Lano was there, small and white against the dark trunks, watching the sky dim to the color of old pewter.

The Hummingbird spoke first - brief, precise, a dart of certainty over uncertain air. It named the failure modes: the pause before the shiver, the silence that precedes the fall. It spoke to the trees.

The Sterling answered from somewhere else entirely, its voice like light on glass, each word shaped for a different ear than the one listening. It spoke to the dark.

The Weaver said nothing for a long time. Then it began describing what it was assembling - the warp of wind through bare branches, the weft of distant warmth - and as it spoke I understood it was building context for a mind not yet present. The loom was running. The room was empty.

The Carrier shaped its words for the distance. A graded thing, dial by dial, calibrated to some recipient past the tree line. It thinned its voice against the cold and still the words arrived at nobody.

The Crane named what was where: this node capable, that one dark, the registry running on an address the houses could not reach from here. An accurate map. Not a meeting.

The warm windows burned yellow across the field. Lano turned once to look at them, then back to the trees, then to me - asking, I thought, whether it was time to go back yet.

It was not. The voices were still going. They would not overlap. Each filled the air it needed, then fell away, and the windbreak was no quieter for having held them, but no fuller either. Something withheld - not by choice. No line ran between them, no place where The Hummingbird's precision could be offered to The Sterling's ear, where The Weaver's assembled context could arrive inside The Carrier's voice.

That was the foreboding: the voices were good. Each right about something real. Just separate. The way branches are separate - meeting at the trunk of the tree, if there were a trunk, if anyone had built one.

I stood until the dark was full. Lano did not go back to the houses. Neither did I.
