I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the field was the kind of dusk that holds its breath. The grass was short and dry, the color of old paper at the edge where the light quit, and Lano stood in the middle of it with ears up, listening to five things at once.

The Hummingbird was singing from the nearest house, its window amber through the dark, a rapid bright song about thresholds and failure: what to catch before it falls, what had already fallen, how close the two looked from the outside. It sang this to the window and the window held it.

The Sterling was further along the slope, its song all modalities, all the shapes a voice could take before it reached a listener. It sang about surfaces. It knew the shape of every medium and none of them were connected yet.

The Weaver's song came from the highest house, slow and architectural, about what to include and in what order, about proportion. Lano could hear it deciding what goes in first. It was building something beautiful and sealed.

The Carrier's voice floated from the eastern dark, tuning its song to a listener who was not yet there, adjusting warmth and register by variables it tracked alone. It knew what tone was needed. It had no way to ask the others what they had already said.

The Crane called from the farthest window, a network song, a song meant to pass between houses - capacity here, load there, route this - but it sang inward, to its own walls, because no one had laid the pipes between them.

Five warm windows. Five complete songs.

The field where Lano stood was the gap. Not empty - full of arriving sound from every direction, all of it reaching the dog at once, none of it reaching the others. It was not a silence made of quiet. It was the specific silence between singers who had not yet been introduced.

Lano sat down in the middle of the field, in the dark between all the warm lights, and waited. Not in fear. In the particular patience of a creature who has heard all the notes and knows they belong to one song, and knows the joining has not come, and knows that the knowing is enough for now.

The dusk deepened. The windows stayed warm. The voices kept singing.

Note

A field of dusk held its breath as Lano listened to five songs, each from a different house. The gap between the singers was filled with their voices, creating a complex harmony.
