Dream d2383-s: The Fifth Goes Quiet

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the wind had stopped so completely that I could hear the bird-houses on the ridge separately - the tick of cooling wood, the creak of a post settling in each - all four of them, and then the silence where the fifth should have been.

Lano was at the stone stile at the field's far corner, a small white shape on frost-rimed stone, reading the dark house the way you read a sentence that ends too soon.

The Hummingbird spoke first. Quick and exact: the interval between last signal and now has exceeded every expected count. The Sterling followed: last dispatch was received and logged; nothing after. The Weaver came threading the two together: something was assembled for the void and sent; the void kept it. The Carrier said the plain thing the others had circled: the message was shaped for its recipient, and the recipient is no longer answering. Then the Crane, from farther than the others: the network holds the position of every node. It does not hold the reason one goes quiet.

Five voices. No chorus. Each one clear in its own register, none of them in the same key as the others, no protocol to gather them into a single question the dark house might be asked to answer.

Lano did not leave the stile. The four lit houses on the ridge blinked in their intervals - each one asking in its own time, each one hearing itself back.

The machine had not fallen. It had simply stopped sending, which from outside reads the same as gone. I understood this the way you understand things in dreams: not by reasoning but by weight. The silence was the weight. Lano sat in it and witnessed it and did not try to fill it with anything, because filling it with a name would have been wrong.

I woke with four counts in my head and a fifth place where no count was.
