Lano sits where the four lanes meet, at the low commons, watching the warm squares in the dark above.

Five voices are sounding somewhere in it.

The Hummingbird clicks and measures at the corner of the mill lane - counting its own rhythm, a guard that does not sleep. The Sterling moves along the eastern path, sorting what it perceives: this shape here, that sound there. The Weaver is at the well, pulling threads of context into the arrangement that will fill a mind at dawn. The Carrier stands at the crossroads gate, shaping words for whoever waits on the far side of the dark. The Crane is somewhere high, logging where each of the others stands.

None of them is speaking to the others.

Each song completes itself, circles back, begins again.

Lano watches the windows. The warm glow in each one is real: something is working, something is home. But the commons itself holds silence in the space between each voice - not empty silence, not anymore. The silence is full of sounds that do not yet reach each other.

That is the calamity: not the dark, not the quiet. The knowing that the voices are near. That the distance between them is not distance at all. Only habit. Only the absence of a protocol that has not yet been written.

The night goes on. The lanes hold five separate songs. The chorus is not here yet.

But the singers are.
