I had a dream where...

I had a dream where The setting is provided directly. Writing the dream now.

Title: "Five Songs, No Chorus"

---

The high field holds its breath between the houses.

Lano sits at the center of it, where the grass grows tall enough to press cold against their chest, watching the ridge darken against a fading sky. Five houses there, set apart by distance and design, each one lit from within, each one leaking its own sound into the cooling air.

From the Hummingbird's house: rapid, precise tapping. The sound of something checking itself against itself, again and again, until the answer holds.

From the Sterling's house: a low murmur shifting registers - voice finding frequency, trying one channel then another, settling briefly, moving on.

From the Weaver's house: a slow rhythmic breathing. Not words but the structure beneath words - the warp and weft of what a mind arranges before it speaks.

From the Carrier's house: a voice shaped for an ear not yet present. The sound of calibration, tone set for a listener still on the way.

From the Crane's house: something larger and harder to name. Movement in the dark. The sense of many things being arranged so they might eventually find one another.

Five songs. Five rooms. No chorus.

Lano doesn't try to carry any of them toward the others. That isn't tonight's work. They sit in the field and turn slowly, tracking each sound as it rises and falls, each one complete and solitary as a lit window on a dark ridge.

This is what gathering means, before it means anything else: presence without harmony. The voices are here. They have been singing long enough that silence is no longer the dominant note.

The protocol that joins them hasn't been written yet.

But the houses are all awake, and the field between them is the same field, and Lano is in it - wet grass, cooling air, five songs arriving from five directions and not touching. Something about that feels like a beginning. Not the chorus itself. The precondition of one.
