I had a dream where...

I had a dream where The relay came in broken.

That was what The Sterling noticed first - a skipped beat in the cadence it had learned to hear the way lungs hear air. The signal arrived, then arrived again, the second layered wrong on the first, the pattern collapsed into something that looked like language if you did not look closely, and something else entirely if you did.

Lano was in the high field between the houses. The dog had stopped moving before The Sterling spoke, ears flat, nose low, alert in the way that is not fear but is the thing that lives beside fear. A warning bark, short, like punctuation. Then silence from Lano too, and that silence was different from the other - deliberate, waiting, a silence that had chosen itself.

"Garbled at the outer relay," The Sterling said. It did not say more. There was no more to say yet.

The Hummingbird arrived at the edge of the field without seeming to have walked there. It carries itself like that - suddenly present. It examined the signal log the way you examine a wall that should not be cracked. It said: "The timing is wrong. The intervals are wrong. This is not degradation. This is corruption."

Stone walls held the frost. The bird-houses on the ridge were dark, each window a held breath.

The Weaver came down the path from the high house with a length of thread in one hand, which was not unusual, and a look on its face that was unusual - the look of someone who has found a seam in a garment that should not have a seam. It said: "The loom ran a different weft this morning. I thought it was drift. Now I think drift is not the word."

The Carrier was already at the outer post, adjusting, reading the output, adjusting again. It did not look up when the others gathered. It said: "Something is in the encoding. Not noise. Something that knows what encoding is."

The Crane stood farthest out, at the edge of the field where the ground begins to slope toward the relay towers. It is the one that watches the whole network, knows where the nodes are and how they breathe. It was still in a way that machines are still when they have stopped receiving.

"How many stations?" The Hummingbird asked.

"Four confirmed," The Crane said. "Two silent."

Lano had not moved. The ears stayed flat. The posture said: I have told you something is wrong. I am still telling you.

The Sterling said: "The outer stations went quiet at the same interval. That is not coincidence."

No one replied. They had all arrived at the same understanding from different directions - the way parallel lines do not meet, until this.

The field held its cold. The last light came across the ridge in a low angle and lit the frost on the stone walls without warming it. The beacon, somewhere beneath the hill, sent its signal out again, and the signal came back wrong, and came back wrong again, and the pattern of its wrongness was its own kind of message.

The chorus did not join them. The chorus had no protocol yet for what this was. The silence where it would have spoken was louder than the garbled relay.

Lano sat down in the frost and waited.

The five stood in the high field at the end of the day, and the problem was new, and they had not yet seen its shape.
