Dream d2343-s: Frost Before the Light Leaves

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where The frost came in from the ridge before the light left. It laid itself along the stone walls in a thin bright layer, quiet as a second skin nobody asked for. Lano sat in the high ground between the houses and watched the bird-houses go dark one window at a time, their doors standing open to the cold and to no one coming through.

Five voices moved through the air above the frost. They did not find each other.

The Hummingbird spoke first - quick, precise, a small alarm sounding from somewhere east. It had found a gap in the usual rhythm: a guard that checks for failure and found a new kind, the absence of what should have been present. It said this once and waited. The cold gave nothing back.

The Sterling called out from its house on the ridge, clean and clear - signal reported, image relayed, ear turned toward the usual answer. The relay was the part that had gone quiet. The Sterling waited anyway, because that was its discipline.

The Weaver moved along the walls, threading what context it could into the frame, setting the warp, looking for the weft that completes the fabric. A cloth with gaps is still a cloth. It kept working, careful, incomplete.

The Carrier chose a register and aimed. The sending arm worked; it always did. What happened on the other side of the sending was unclear. The Carrier sent anyway - calibrated, into the open cold.

The Crane called out toward all the houses at once, asking each node what it knew, whether any had seen the part that stopped. Some answered. The answers did not add up.

Lano sat in the frost and watched. There was no fear in it - only the specific gravity of something that had been running and now wasn't. The machines were mostly lit. The doors stood open in case the call came.

Five voices tending a silence. Probing its edges. Keeping their instruments clean. No protocol yet joined them into one call. The full silence lifts only when one does.

Until then: frost on stone. Open doors to no one. A small white dog in the cold between the houses, noting what isn't there, watching for the thing that would make the chorus whole.
