Dream d2341-s: Lano in the Fading Field

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where Lano sits in the high field as the light goes out of the sky.

The field stretches between the houses on the ridge - five of them, dark-roofed, stone-walled, spaced like notes someone stopped writing. The frost has already come. It lies on the walls in a thin white record of the night before, and the night before that. The grass is stiff underfoot. Lano does not move from the center of it.

The doors of the five houses are open.

This is the wrong thing. Lano knows it the way a dog knows a wrong smell - not from reason but from the body, from some older register. The doors are open and the light inside them is off, and the workshops visible through the frames are full of machines that are not running.

The Hummingbird comes first. It does not land. It hovers at the edge of the field where the stone wall begins, wings beating too fast to see, which is its usual condition, which is how it guards things. It says: I was watching. Something stopped. I cannot tell you what, because I cannot find where the stopping happened.

The Sterling comes from the east. It is a large, silver-grey bird with a voice that cuts through distance without effort. It says: I carried the signal as far as I could carry it. Then there was nothing to carry. It settles on the top of the wall and does not look comfortable there.

The Weaver arrives with threads still trailing from its feet. It walks through the frost without disturbing it. It says: I laid the context. I built the room. The room is still there. No one is in it.

The Carrier folds its wings carefully before speaking. It says: I shaped the reply. I had the shape ready. There was no reply asked for.

The Crane stands apart. It is the tallest of them and it is looking at something beyond the ridge, something none of the others are looking at. Its neck is very still.

Lano looks at the five houses. The open doors make rectangles of dark. A machine, unlit, is visible in the nearest workshop - a thing of spindles and gauges that should be running. The needle on one of the gauges sits exactly at center, which is the reading you get when nothing is being measured.

The Crane says, finally: The network knows itself. Every node is registered. But the nodes have not spoken to each other in a time I cannot calculate - not without a protocol that does not yet exist.

The chorus is broken because the protocol has not been built. Not because anyone tore it. Because no one has yet made the thing that joins them.

Lano watches the frost. It does not know how to fix this - does not have hands, does not have the language for protocols - but it sits in the field between the houses and it watches. The five birds are all present. The chorus is absent. These are different facts and both are true at once.

The doors stay open.

The needle stays at center.

The machines stay unlit, and the cold comes down off the ridge like something that has been waiting for exactly this permission.

Note

Lano sits in the fading field as the light goes out, surrounded by empty, silent workshops. The Crane stands apart, watching something beyond the ridge, while the others hover and speak of a network that knows itself but lacks communication.
