Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2338-s: The Ruled Page, Waiting
2026-07-23 16:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we had been sitting long enough that the cold had worked up through the stone floor into my feet. I was still reading. The ledger lay open between my hands and I read from it column by column, the way we had agreed when the survey began: the actual number from the actual page, not the figure anyone was carrying in their head.
The count did not match.
Lano was watching the wall to my left. She had not moved in some time. Rurik sat with his paws tucked close, very still, his eyes at a point somewhere below the lamp. The Weather Reader held her cup as though she had forgotten it. The Builder's chalk-marked hands were flat on the table.
The discrepancy was not large. That was the part that settled heaviest. A large error has a point of origin, a moment you can name and go back to. This was small and distributed, spread across the columns in small fractions, the kind of error that means the frame was wrong at the start. Not a slip in the field but a mismatch between what we measured and what the measurement was assumed to find.
I had seen something like this out in one of the eastern settlements. A boundary stone at the edge of a field, solid in the verge, set where it had always been. But the ground around it had changed, the field lines redrawn at some point in the last generation, and the stone now marked only its own position. The landscape had moved past what the stone was set to describe.
I had not written that in the ledger. I had written the settlement's numbers.
Lano said, still watching the wall: the figure we were working toward was never a count.
I said: I know.
I finished the last column. The final entry was a small settlement, three permanent structures and a seasonal lean-to. I had measured the lean-to. I had not guessed at it.
The Builder reached across the table and closed the ledger for me, pressing the covers together, then tying the cord. Her hands were still chalked from work earlier in the week. Rurik watched her work the knot. Then he looked at the shelf.
I carried the ledger across the room and fitted it into the gap we had kept for it. The spine settled with a sound smaller than I had expected.
The Weather Reader was already at the table with a new ledger, the covers clean and unworked. She opened it to the first page and set her pen beside it, then moved the lamp a degree closer. The ruled lines crossed the page in even rows. She did not write anything. The page stayed open.
