Dream d2326-s: Dusk at the Proper Hall

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the smell of an ordered place reached me before the walls did - something between scrubbed stone and old timber, and underneath it the particular absence that settles into rooms where no one has moved anything in a long while.

We came down the last slope into Ospreymoss as the light was failing. Through the gap in the collapsed eaves I could see a lamp burning inside the roofless hall. Not warm. Not welcoming. Just burning, in the way a flame burns when no one has come to snuff it in sixty-nine days.

Lano stopped walking. Rurik sat down on the path without being asked.

The ledger was in my pack and I left it there. Not yet. The first pass belongs to the eyes.

The condition of the place was impeccable. That was the thing nobody said aloud as we moved under the lintel: every hall was clean, every object in the position it had been placed in by hands that were careful and then gone. The swept corners. The folded implements. An attendance at arrangement that had frozen at some exact moment and held. The place did not verify its own state; it simply held it, the way a stopped clock holds a time.

I counted what I could see without opening the ledger. One main hall. Smaller buildings adjoining, roof gone from two of them. The burning lamp. I made a mark in the margin of my thinking before I could name what I was marking - a tally started ahead of any clear reckoning, because the rule of the survey is that you write it the hour you see it, even when you cannot yet say what it means.

The Weather Reader stood at the open end of the hall and looked at the sky. She said nothing, which was itself a kind of report.

The Builder walked the perimeter with her hands behind her back, touching nothing, her face doing the thing it does when she has decided not to speak.

I took out the pellet-stone and held it. Grey, light, like a fact reduced to its minimum. The Book of Readings was in the same pocket and I did not open that either.

Lano is standing next to me now, shoulder to shoulder, both of us looking at the lamp in the open hall. One flame in a building whose roof has been sky longer than anyone in this party has known it. Neither of us names what it is burning against.
