Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2323-s: Still Placed at the Rim
2026-07-22 14:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the ground changed before the walls came into view. The path had been running through scrub and loose-stone margins for most of the hour, and then suddenly the footing smoothed - not gravel, not packed earth, but something deliberately laid, still holding its joints after however long it had been holding them alone. We came up over a low ridge and Willowbarrow was below us, open to the sky.
It was clean. That was the thing that troubled me first, before the quiet, before the chill that lifted off the stones despite the hour not being cold. Clean and well-ordered, laid out the way a careful mind lays things out when it expects to come back. The halls were roofless now but the walls stood, each one true to its neighbor, nothing collapsed or listed. Rurik dropped low to the ground at the ridge-line and held there for a moment, reading something I couldn't name.
Lano moved in first. She tests thresholds by crossing them, always has.
The Builder said nothing, which said more than I could write down quickly. She stood with her hands loose at her sides and looked at the gate-arch and the way the vines had come over it - not violently, not in the way of breakage, but settling, the way a cover settles over something put away.
The Weather Reader had a name for the light here. She didn't say it.
The survey ledger sat in my pack. I didn't open it yet. There is a kind of counting that needs a moment of just looking first, before the numbers go in and fix what is counted in the record. Eighty-three days is not so long, for stone. For work, it is long enough to matter.
We found the tool in the second hall. It lay on a low bench the way a tool lies when someone has set it down mid-motion, intending to pick it up again inside the minute. The handle was smooth from use. I put my hand near it - not touching, just near. Long cold. Whatever warmth it had carried had been gone since before any of us came over that ridge.
Nothing here checked its own work. That was in the measured facts and I had read them before we set out, but knowing something and arriving at it are separate acts. The lamp inside the far hall burned against the coming dark, lit for no one, fed by some reservoir nobody had thought to top off in eighty-three days.
Lano sits on the threshold stone, facing inward, ears forward, not resting.
