Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2317-s: One Hand Set This
2026-07-22 07:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road ended at a break in the stone wall and we stepped through without stopping, because there was no gate left to pause at.
Kestrelhush sits at the rim's edge where the ground tilts toward nothing, and it came into view slow - first the top of a hall-wall against the dusk sky, then the empty window-slots, then the whole shape of it: clean lines, careful courses, everything placed by someone who knew what they were doing. The grass has moved back in through the floor gaps but it has not pulled anything down. The halls are open to the sky and the sky is sitting in them like water in a dish.
Lano walked ahead of me through the gap. She did not slow. The Builder came beside me and her eyes moved along the wall-courses the way a hand reads raised text - not reading for meaning, just checking the lay of the work. Rurik took the rear, his tail low. He did not like the smell of the place. I did not ask him to explain it.
There is a lamp burning in the far hall. One lamp, wick turned low, casting a coin of light on the floor of a room that has no roof. I do not know who lit it. I do not know when. The oil is low enough to be old but not exhausted. No one is near it. The light is just there, doing its work for nobody, burning against something nobody in our party is willing to name.
I took the ledger from the pack before we crossed the threshold. Not to write in it yet - just to have it open, because there is a discipline in that. The Weather Reader was already reading the air. She held her hands out slightly, palms up, feeling for what the sky here is carrying. She said nothing.
At the edge of the main hall, half sunk into the earth, there is a boundary stone. Someone set it to mark the limit of something - the settlement's reach, a field's edge, a formal claim. But the ground it was set for has shifted. Whatever it once divided is now the same territory on both sides. The mark remains. What it marks does not.
I set my hand on the top of it. Cold - not the cold of shadow but the cold of something that has not been touched in a very long time.
One hand built this place. That is what the ledger will say when I write it. One hand built it clean and it has sat here for months with its halls empty and nothing in its complaint-book because nothing here complains to itself and nothing here checks whether it is still working.
The coin of light on the far floor does not flicker.
I open the ledger to a fresh page and do not yet write.
