Dream d2309-s: The Lamp Keeps Its Post
2026-07-21 14:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the path flattened before the settlement showed itself. That was the first sign: the ground levels, the grass shortens, as though something once insisted on it and the habit held. I stepped off the last scrub-trail and felt the change underfoot before I saw the walls - a surface that had been tended, long ago, and had not given up the shape.
Quillmoss came in pieces through the failing light. Low walls, roofless but upright. Lanes between them still running straight. A settlement at the rim, open to the sky, and the sky tonight was the colour of water left standing too long.
Lano moved ahead of me, her white coat grey in this weather. She did not say anything. The Weather Reader had gone quiet two ridges back, which I had learned to read. Rurik walked at my left, and I could hear him breathing, which he does not usually allow.
The Builder stopped at the gate arch and looked up at the lintel. I watched her hand go to the stone - not touching, just near, the way you hold a palm close to a fire you are not sure is out. She moved through without a word.
Inside, the lanes were clear. Not overgrown, not collapsed - clear. The halls still had their lintels and their thresholds. Tools hung on the hooks where they had been placed. On a bench near the inner court, a set of gauges laid in the order they would have been used: smallest to largest, edge-side down, the way a careful hand sets them when it means to come back. Long cold. Sixty-two days or near enough. I did not touch them.
There was a lamp burning in one of the inner halls. We found it without looking for it, which is the way of such things: a light where no one left it and no one now tended it, burning against something the place had not named in its book. The book held no open complaint. Everything here was in its proper hall.
Lano stood in the doorway and looked in. I stood behind her. The light was wrong for this hour - too steady, too specific, as though it had been aimed at something and was still aimed. Rurik sat on the threshold behind us. He did not speak.
The ledger is still in my pack. I am standing at the edge of that light, the gauge-bench cold behind me and the lamp burning for the empty hall, and I have not yet begun to write.
