Dream d2300-s: Cold Light, No One Here

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the rim road dropped away and Ospreymoss opened before us without announcement - not a gate, not a marker, just the place itself sitting at the edge of things as though it had always been sitting there and had simply waited for us to notice.

The ground was swept. That was the first thing. The paths between the halls were bare and clean, each stone set level against its neighbor, and the moss grew only where moss belongs - at the joints, in the low seams, not across the walking surface. Somebody laid this out with care. That somebody is fifty-five days gone.

Rurik moved ahead along the outer wall, his tail low and his ears reading something I couldn't yet hear. Lano walked at my left shoulder, quiet in a way she rarely is, her white coat pulling what little light the sky offered. The Builder paused at the threshold of the first hall and pressed her palm flat against the door frame - not pushing, just feeling. The Weather Reader lifted her head and looked at nothing, the way she does when the air is saying something she hasn't translated yet.

It is louder than its size. That was what I couldn't name until I had stood in the central corridor long enough. The wind off the rim passed through Ospreymoss as it passes through something hollow, finding harmonics in the stonework, so that every small sound - a heel on flagstone, a shutter on its pin - arrived cleaner than it should, stripped of the muffle that living places carry. And then underneath that, quieter: the absence where work sounds used to go. No tool, no voice, no fire laid for the morning.

I opened the ledger on my knee in the low doorway of the eastern hall. My hand found the grey pellet-stone in my coat pocket before I wrote anything - old habit now, something to press before the first mark. One lamp still burned somewhere in the interior, oil running shallow, lit before the last departure and not yet out. Nobody lit it today. I wrote that down alongside the count, then checked the Book of Readings for any prior entry and found none. The number of open complaints standing against this place is zero, which is not the same as nothing to fear.

Lano sat down beside me. Rurik circled once at the far end of the corridor and stopped.

The lamp flame moved, though the air inside was still.
