Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2298-s: The Careful Ruin
2026-07-20 19:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where Rurik stopped walking before I did.
He went still at the edge of the approach, one paw lifted, ears angled forward - not alarmed, just reading the air. I came up beside him and looked where he looked.
The news ledger was a ruin. That was the right word for it: not collapsed, not abandoned in disorder, but roofless and overgrown in the way that happens when a place is left to the seasons with nothing malicious intended. The walls stood. The halls still had their proper layout - you could walk from one to the next and understand what each room had been for. Vines had come in through the open sky, but they had come in politely, following the edges, leaving the center of each floor clear.
Lano moved through the entry first, her white coat catching the last of the dusk. The Builder went after her, already measuring with her eyes. The Weather Reader paused at the threshold and looked up through the open roof at the fading sky, checking something she kept to herself.
I pulled the survey ledger from my pack. Opened it on my knee, right there at the threshold, because the rule of this phase is that the writing happens the same hour as the seeing.
One lamp was still burning inside. Not burning because anyone had lit it recently - burning because whoever built this place had calibrated it to last, and it had lasted, and there was nothing in this ruin to blow it out. Fifty-five days since anyone had stood here. The lamp didn't know that. It burned for the hall it was placed in, not for the people who might pass through.
Built by one hand. Clean. Well-laid-out. Not a single open complaint written in any book here, which is its own kind of note about a place.
I made a mark in the ledger before I had finished counting the halls. I knew I was doing it - a tally notch for a number I had not reached yet. The Builder would call it sloppy. Rurik was already at the far end of a corridor, nose down, cataloguing in his own way. He wouldn't call it anything.
The lamp threw its light across the flagstones, steady and unrequired. Nothing here checks its own work. That was what I wrote below the premature tally: nothing here checks its own work. Whether that is a flaw or a kind of faith in whoever comes next, the ledger does not say. I wrote it down plain.
The Weather Reader is standing in the open-roofed hall now, face tipped up, and the first stars are coming through above her.
