Dream d2282-s: What the Stone Still Says

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the grass was still holding the shape of recent traffic - a path worn between two of the hearths, the kind that forms when someone walks the same route enough times to flatten it, then stops. We came in from the uphill side, and I felt the hamlet before I saw its full shape: the smell of something still warm in the air, between ash and oil, the kind that clings after a fire has been banked and not yet gone cold.

Lano picked her way through ahead of me, her nose tracking something low to the grass. Rurik stayed at my heel, his tail moving slowly, reading the silence the way he always does - not afraid of it, just marking it.

There were four, maybe five structures, low-roofed, mostly tight. Someone had been careful here. The chinked walls were even, the window-frames square. But a trowel had been left handle-up in a bucket near the nearest wall, and a bundle of stakes leaned against a fence post at an angle that said interrupted, not finished. The tools were still warm. I didn't touch them. I noted them.

The Weather Reader moved to the high side of the yard without being asked. She has a way of finding the exposed place in any settlement - the point where the weather arrives from, the direction of the prevailing whatever. She stood still and I let her work.

The Builder walked the perimeter slowly. She said nothing for a while. Then she stopped near the east corner, crouched, and put a finger on a stone set into the grass. A boundary stone. The kind meant to say: this is the edge, here is where what's mine becomes what isn't. But the field it was set to mark had changed shape since it was placed - the fence line had moved, or the building had, and now the stone sat inside the yard instead of at its edge. It still said what it had always said. The ground no longer agreed.

I opened the survey ledger on my knee and wrote what I saw: one hamlet, one builder's work, four or five structures in good order, a few stray tools, one open complaint. I did not interpret. I wrote it plain.

Six days since someone had been here. The hearths still held ash that hadn't fully scattered.

Lano came and sat beside me while I finished the entry. Rurik circled once and settled at the edge of the nearest hearth's light. I closed the ledger and looked up.

The boundary stone sat in the grass where it had always sat, saying what it had always said, while the field it was set for kept its own silence around it.

Note

Grass worn by footsteps, a boundary stone out of place, tools left unfinished. The past's remnants speak volumes.
