Dream d2268-s: The Boundary Stone, Adrift

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where two paths crossed at the bend leading into the commons and neither had yielded to the other - they simply overlapped, each worn into the other's surface, and you had to choose your line or mix them. I had come back this morning with the ledger under my arm and a cleaner eye than yesterday's.

Lano ranged ahead of me across the grass, her white shape moving through the low shadow the commons threw. The Builder had been here already; I could tell by the stakes she had driven into the turf along the eastern edge, their twine still holding tension. The Weather Reader stood near the boundary stone on the north side, and she was frowning at it.

I walked to her. The stone was old - older than anything else the survey had recorded here, older than the single pair of hands that had raised this village. It had been set for an edge that no longer matched the ground it marked. The commons had grown around it, then past it. Now it stood inside what should have been the outer ring, not on it, and my ledger showed the number plainly: one complaint, one unresolved note in the village's own book, and this stone was part of that story.

I didn't adjust the stone. I wrote it.

Rurik found me there, pacing the discrepancy. He sat at a distance and watched with the patience he carried everywhere - he had stopped asking why I counted things aloud. I counted them because I didn't trust the eye alone. The eye smoothed. The foot on the ground did not.

The tools the Builder had used were still propped against the commons fence - newer than the stone, warmer to the touch than something five days untouched had any right to be, as if the work here had stopped mid-thought. Not abandoned. Paused.

I kept returning to the fact of one hand. One hand had drawn these paths, set these foundations, measured these distances. The paths crossing each other without resolution were not chaos; they were the work of someone who added as the need arose and didn't know at the start where the end would be. I recognized the method.

Lano came back to stand beside me. The ledger was open on my knee, the column for this place nearly full. I wrote the complaint. I wrote the position of the stone as it actually stood, not as the first marker had placed it.

The twine on the Builder's stakes runs east to west, taut in the still air.
