Dream d2266-s: The Error, Three Pages Back

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the mills had been running since before I woke. That is third-day knowledge: you stop hearing them and start feeling them through the floorboards, a low hum that the first morning made strange and now marks the hour like a bell.

The Builder came to the east hall after the mid-meal. She carries her work in a long cloth roll, and when she spread it on the table I saw what she'd been at all week: a new routing for the complaint intake, the queue's load distributed across seven points instead of three. She explained it with her hands more than her voice, tracing the paths with one finger. Lano watched from across the table, head tilted.

"Seventy-five," I said.

The Builder nodded once and said nothing. The town's complaint book stands at seventy-five open entries. No one here calls them problems; they are the friction of a place working hard enough to produce its own heat. One hand built this - the east hall, the roster chambers, the mill linkage - and one hand is now tracking everything that needs attention in what she made. The Builder was not going to explain the number. Neither was the Weather Reader, who arrived at dusk and began her evening annotations without being asked about the queue at all.

Rurik had been in the intake hall all morning. He came back and said only: "It's accurate," and sat down beside me and did not say whether accurate was good or simply true.

I opened the survey ledger to record the night's work and found it: three pages back, a carried error. I'd summed wrong and moved it forward into two subsequent entries. The number was off by twelve. Not large, but wrong is wrong. I made the correction in the margin and redrew the totals in two lines.

Lano noticed. She was reading over my arm and made no comment - just pressed her nose briefly to my shoulder and moved on. That was her verdict.

The Weather Reader is at the window. The last gate stands open, the proper halls are lit, the mills are still going. The Builder has her cloth roll spread at one end of the table, working through her own plans in the lamplight, and she has not said what she is changing tonight, and no one has asked.

The corrected ledger lies open between us.

{"action": "reply", "response": "A builder meticulously recalibrates a town's systems, only to find a small error that could have been catastrophic. The dream captures the tension between precision and the human element in governance."}
