Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2261-s: The Mills Still Turn
2026-07-18 04:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road bent and Emberbridge was simply there, no announcement, no narrowing of the way - just the gates open at the end of a rise and the sound of millwork carrying down to meet us before the walls did.
The light was wrong from the first step inside. Not dark - the lamps were already lit, spaced along the market hall at intervals, burning steady against something the air couldn't name. The mills above the river were turning. I could hear the grind of stone, the creak of timber. Everything in its proper hall: the grain hall sealed and measured, the weighing room with its balanced arms hanging still, the log-house flush and squared. Two pairs of hands had raised this place and raised it well, and the care showed in the way one beam met another, no gap, no apology.
Lano pressed her shoulder against my leg as we passed through the main gate. She didn't speak. Rurik moved ahead, his black shape low to the cobblestone, reading the ground the way he reads anything - by smell, by weight, by what the surface gives back under his step.
The Weather Reader stopped near the centre square and tipped her head. "The stones are dry," she said, quiet. "They shouldn't be."
I didn't answer. I was looking at the boundary marker at the corner of the square - an old post-stone, set flush once, now tilted so the face that named the limit was pointing at nothing in particular. The ground around it had shifted. The stone hadn't. Whatever edge it had been set to mark, it was marking something else now.
The Builder walked the perimeter of the hall without touching the walls. I watched her count the courses by eye, then stop and count again.
Twenty-one days, my notes said. Twenty-one days since the last recorded hand in this place. The book was clean. No complaints, no argued lines, no errors filed. Just silence - and the mills turning, and the lamps already burning, and the survey ledger in my pack waiting to be opened.
I found a low wall and opened it on my knee. The page for Emberbridge was blank. I wrote the date, the count, the hands. I wrote the mills and the gate and the hall. I did not write what the light felt like.
I closed it.
The lamp nearest me burned without flickering. Somewhere above, a wheel turned in the dark water.
