Dream d2258-s: Louder for the Fewer Roofs

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the hill put us above it before the village made a sound.

From the ridge I saw the roofs first - four or five of them, maybe six, set back from each other at angles that said someone had thought about wind and morning light. The commons opened between them: grass worn pale near the center but growing well at the edges, as though foot traffic had found the same line year after year and left the rest alone. Clean. It had the look of a place that held itself together without being forced to.

Lano went down ahead of me. She picked a route along the eastern wall of one of the halls, white coat against the stone, nose low, reading the ground the way she does before she will say anything about a place. Rurik took a position at the commons edge and simply sat, watching the far end of the lane between the northern halls. He did not move.

The Weather Reader put her back to the wind, which was coming off the valley below and carrying nothing that worried her. "No change before morning," she said. That was all.

The Builder had already found the threshold of the largest hall and was standing in its doorway without going through, measuring the frame with her eye. The door was sound.

What I had not expected was the noise. Not loud - nothing you would call noise in a crowded place - but for a village of this few roofs the sound was steady. A tool on metal somewhere in the northern quarter. Something settling in one of the halls. Wind through an eave cut to catch it on purpose. I wrote in the ledger, crouched on the commons grass with it open across one knee: steady sound. Louder for the fewer roofs. The pellet-stone pressed through the canvas of the pack against my hip. I closed the ledger.

I had been carrying the phrase for the last hour of walking: a place that is louder than its size and a place that is quieter. Standing in the commons I could feel both. The tool sound, the settling, the caught wind as one layer. Below it a stillness so organized it held the noise up the way a floor holds a chair.

One pair of hands built this. Done in winter, five months back. Whatever work is going on tonight is not that work. That work is finished, lodged in the rooflines, the cut eave, the commons edge. Tonight's work is something else.

Across the commons a lamp is on behind glass in the far hall. Lano comes back from her circuit and sits beside me in the grass. Rurik has not moved.

The lamp is on. Someone is there.
