Dream d2255-s: Stopped, Not Abandoned

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the mill on the high side was already turning before I saw the town. I heard it first - that low wooden complaint of a wheel finding its notch - and then the slope opened and it was there: gate posts standing wide, the road between them worn to pale clay.

Lano took the first step through. She did not pause at the threshold the way she sometimes does; she walked in as if the gate were just two posts and the question of welcome already settled. Rurik followed, one ear up. The Builder came in last, her pack riding high, and she looked left first, then right, the way she always does when entering a place she means to learn.

Thirty-seven, I said. Not to anyone. I was keeping the number honest against the wish - against the pull toward rounding it, or borrowing one from elsewhere, or claiming I had not noticed. Thirty-seven built it. That was the count, and I said it aloud because the ledger was not yet open.

The Weather Reader stopped near the first hall and tipped her face toward the sky. Checking the light. The day was flat, overcast but not threatening, and the mills did not care about the sky - they went on turning.

Everything here was in its place. That was the word for it. Not beautiful in the way of a garden or a plaza: just properly laid, each hall facing the one it should face, the distances measured once and held. We walked the main way and I counted again - not the builders this time, but the halls themselves, naming them under my breath so I would not confuse what I knew with what I saw. The granary. The fulling house. The cooperage, door ajar, tools on the bench, tang of new shavings still in the air.

Work had stopped recently. Not abandoned - stopped. There is a difference. Abandoned things fall away from each other; stopped things hold their arrangement and wait.

Lano found a water trough and leaned over it to look at her own face. Rurik sat beside her, watching the far end of the street.

I took the pellet-stone from my pocket - the grey one - and held it for a moment, then put it back. A small accounting before the ledger comes out: feel what I am carrying before I write what I see.

The mills go on turning. The gates are still open behind us.
