Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2249-s: Everything in Its Hall
2026-07-17 08:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road dropped onto a flat approach and the town was simply there, wider than I had expected, rooftops stepped up the hillside in orderly rows. I heard it before I reached the gates: the low, rhythmic knock of millwork, a sound like a healthy pulse, like something that had been running all morning and would run all evening and had not needed to announce itself once.
Lano walked at my left shoulder. Rurik paced ahead, reading the lay of the buildings the way he reads any new place - not quickly, but with that unhurried method that means he is already sorting what matters from what does not.
The gates were open. Not ajar - open. Wide, with no one posted, because there was no reason to post someone. Inside, everything was in its hall. Carts moved in a lane meant for carts. The tanning yard sat beside water. The cooperage sat beside the tanning yard. I noticed I was counting before I had decided to count: rooftops, chimneys, the number of fires in the forge quarter. My hand had the ledger out and was making a mark before I had named what I was marking. A single stroke, not yet a number, not yet a category - a tally made before the thing it was tallying had been understood. I let it stand. The place would resolve itself into the entry soon enough.
The Weather Reader had moved toward the ridge above the east-facing halls, watching something I could not see from here. The Builder was already at a wall - not touching it, just looking at the coursework. In my pack, the grey pellet-stone and the Book of Readings sat heavy at the bottom where they had settled for days of walking. I did not reach for either.
Then Lano stopped.
She stopped mid-stride, weight forward, ears dropping flat. A sound from her throat that was not a bark yet, but would be. I followed her eyes to the relay post at the edge of the grain hall - a short tower, a beacon arm, the kind of thing you do not notice because it has always been doing its work cleanly.
It was not doing its work cleanly.
The arm moved wrong. Not broken - wrong. A small, jerking deviation in the rotation, a stutter in what should have been continuous sweep. From farther down the road I heard, faintly, another relay in answer: not the clean pulse I expected, but something garbled, a pattern doubled over itself, a signal that had arrived and was still somehow trying to leave at the same time.
Lano barked once, sharp and short.
The mill behind us kept turning. The gates stayed open. The town was as orderly as I had measured it - forty-seven structures, at a count not yet finished, a mark still open in the ledger.
The relay arm stuttered again against the late sky.
