Dream d2233-s: The Stone the Ground Outgrew

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where morning heat came up through the paving stones before the sun reached the top of the wall. I stood at the gate with the pack already settled on my shoulders, the ledger strapped flat against my spine, and watched smoke lift from the workshop district in clean separate columns - each chimney with its own trade, its own hour.

The city had organized itself that way. Everything in its proper hall: kilns in the west quarter, looms nearer the centre, the sorting tables out by the eastern gate where the light arrived first. One hand had laid it out, and that hand had been careful. First stone in deep winter, months ago, and since then the place had grown exactly as intended, no more, no less. You could read the intention in the gutters, in the way the alleys turned without a wasted corner.

Lano sat on a low wall near the fountain, watching the Builder cross the yard below. The Builder moved the way she always moved - head tilted slightly, reading a problem only she could see. Rurik was beside me, tail low, his black coat already warm from the sun. He had not spoken since we came through the gate four mornings ago, but he had watched everything.

The Weather Reader had gone ahead to the road marker, the old boundary stone, and she was standing over it when I caught up. It sat where it had always sat, carved with the original measure - but the city had grown past it three or four blocks to the west, and the ground it was set for was now the middle of a market aisle. The stone itself was unchanged. The number on it was still accurate, if you read it as what the land had been when the marker went in. It just described nothing visible anymore.

She didn't move it. That wasn't the survey's job.

I opened the ledger on the flat top of the marker - for the surface, or for the irony - and wrote what was true: the boundaries as they stand now, the three complaints still open in the city's own book, the single founding hand, the long unbroken line of life from that first stone to this morning's smoke. The last note I made was that the marker remained, unchanged, measuring a ground that had shifted under it without malice, without announcement.

Lano came to stand beside me. She pressed her flank against my leg for a moment and then stepped back.

I closed the ledger. The columns of smoke held their shapes a little longer in the still air, each one straight as a plumb line. Then the wind shifted, and they bent.
