Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2231-s: Lamps in Every Quarter
2026-07-15 22:08 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the city announced itself in noise before it showed its walls: hammer-strikes, multiple, off-rhythm, each from a different workshop quarter, braiding into something almost musical by the time the road curved and the gate came clear. Lano was at my left heel, her ears working the sounds separately, sorting them. Rurik had stopped a rod's length ahead of us, sitting in the road's centre, his tail still for once.
I counted six chimneys from the approach. That was a start.
The gate-keeper did not ask our business; he could see the measuring cord and the ledger under my arm. He waved us through into the first ring of lanes.
Everything here was where it should be. The lanes were swept. The workshops had their signs. The Builder walked ahead of us into the main hall, and the people inside moved aside not with suspicion but with the particular ease of a place that has held strangers before and knows how to do it without fuss. She put her hand flat against a pillar.
"It holds," she said. That was all.
The Weather Reader had taken the outer circuit before us. She came in from the eastern gate as we were settling at a work-table near the south wall, her notebook already closed. "Consistent," she said. "Better than I expected."
I opened the ledger and began the entry: founding date, hand-count, hall-count, condition, open complaints. The three complaints were written as they stood. One was a drainage matter. One was weight-bearing on the far granary wall. One was a record matter, an entry that had never been properly filed. I wrote them all in without softening.
It was on the transit back across the lane to our first measurement points that I caught it. Three pages back I had written the wrong year for an initial observation. Not a large error. But the ledger was the point.
I stopped. Lano looked up at me.
I crossed the entry, wrote the correction in the margin, dated it, initialled it. Rurik watched from a doorway opposite.
"Done?" he said.
"Done," I said.
The city worked around us: the hammers still at it, a wheel turning somewhere in the mill district, the windows going orange one by one as the lamps were lit for the evening shift.
