Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2219-s: Where the Cord Runs True
2026-07-15 04:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the city smelled like sawdust and hot metal before I could see it properly.
We had slept inside the walls - the Builder had found a room with a clean floor and shutters that closed, and when I woke the light through the slats was already working light, not dawn light. Lano was sitting up against the wall with her ears forward, listening to something in the street below. Rurik had gone out already, or had never come in; his pack was not where I had left it.
By the time I found the survey ledger and got my boots on, the street was full. That is the thing about a place like this: the work starts before you can ask who starts it. Five sets of hands built this city, and they built it so the work outlasts the builders being present - the halls arranged around their own logic, each one clear about what belongs inside it. I paced the first eastern corridor before the Builder caught up with me. She had a lamp even though we did not need it; she is the kind of person who carries the lamp anyway.
We counted together. I called the length off the cord and entered it; she looked for gaps in what the count suggested. The Weather Reader came behind us making notes in her own way - not distances, she said, but pressures: which halls felt closed, which felt like they could hold more than they were holding. I did not argue with her method. There is more than one kind of true.
The complaints were in the book kept at the gate - not buried, not softened, just listed. Five of them. I copied them into the survey ledger without editorializing. An ugly number is not improved by calling it something complicated.
Rurik found us at midday near the western boundary. He had been walking the outer wall, he said, and had found something: a boundary stone, cut and set with real care, its face worn but legible, marking a corner of jurisdiction that did not match any corner of the wall as it now stood. The city had grown toward it and then around it and the stone had not moved. It still said what it had always been going to say. The ground had decided otherwise.
I wrote that down too. The grey pellet-stone shifted in my pack when I stopped to write; it does that, a small weight against whatever else is in there. I noted the discrepancy and left judgment out of it.
By evening we have paced roughly three-quarters of the named halls. Lano is sitting on a low wall outside the second-tier workshops, her chin tilted toward the light coming through a window, watching someone inside work at something she cannot see from where she is.
