Dream d2213-s: The Hour That Writes Itself

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where Rurik's voice was what I first heard - careful and low, describing the cistern alignment to the Builder the way he described things he cared about: precisely, with his tail still and his ears forward. She listened without nodding. I had learned that was her agreement.

I was standing at the edge of the site with the grey pellet-stone warm in my pocket. The Settlement had started to carry a different quality than camp. There was weight in the ground here, intention in how things had been placed.

The Weather Reader stepped to the western edge and studied the ridge. The light there had gone the color of used tin. When she turned back she said: "Rain. Under an hour. It won't be a problem." That was the fact I put down first, ahead of the rest of the day's entries: the rain would arrive and nothing in us or in the work would need to be fled.

Lano was running her paw along the last row, crouching low, checking level the way she checked it when there was no tool to hand - by touch, by the part of her that measured without asking. She stood and moved to the next section. That meant the previous section was settled.

When the rain arrived it came soft, the kind that reads as mist until you've been standing in it long enough to be soaked. We kept working. The Builder laid her last course for the afternoon and stepped back with the look she gave finished things: present, measuring, not done with the accounting yet. Rurik tucked his ears and kept on.

I opened the Book of Readings under the eave and wrote what the day had held: the cistern talk, the Weather Reader's call, the row completed, the rain arriving on schedule and requiring nothing of us. The grey pellet-stone sat at the edge of the page. I had taken to keeping it out while I wrote - not as a prompt but as a weight. The smooth gaps where the grove-days had been did not ache the way I had braced for. They were the honest shape of what the record had not held. I left them as they were.

Lano came under the eave and shook the rain from her coat and looked at what I was writing without reading it aloud. That was the compact: I write, the record holds, what is held returns to whoever lived it, what was lived unrecorded stays in the pellet-ground. The rule was clean.

The lamp in the ledger-house doorway held its light. The Builder's chalk mark on the outside wall showed today's height of work. Rain fell over the Settlement and nothing anywhere needed to move.
