Dream d2204-s: The Bed That Keeps

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the morning began with chalk lines on bare ground.

The Builder had marked them before we woke - the perimeter of what would become a store-room behind the ledger-house, and the survey line bisecting the whole site from north wall to south. We followed her gestures as she walked it: here, there, the junction at twelve paces. Lano moved beside her, noting measurements in the Book of Readings with the short end of a charcoal stick, reading each figure back before the Builder moved on. She did not accept approximate numbers. If Lano misread, the Builder stopped and waited until it was right.

Rurik worked the eastern edge, setting plumb against the courses already laid. He moved without speaking, adjusting by eye and string, and when a block sat fractionally off he took it up without comment and reset it. The Weather Reader stood at the south corner, reading sky more than ground: she said only that we had a dry window through midday, and that was information enough to work by.

I carried the grey pellet-stone in my coat pocket. Not as a weight - I had stopped thinking of it that way - but as a reminder of what the rule looks like when it is finished: compact, holdable, the cost already paid and made small. The unwritten grove-days were gone now, smooth in the record the way a healed-over joint is smooth, not a scar so much as a seam. I did not mourn them this morning. The Book held what it held, and that was back with me.

Late in the afternoon the Builder opened a bed in the margin ground - the strip between the ledger-house east wall and the property line, too narrow for coursework but protected on three sides from wind. She had prepared it earlier: sifted earth, a border of flat stones to hold the soil from washing. She took a seed from the fold of cloth where she kept her working notes - a Weaverdown seed, the kind that had come down with us - and pressed it in, and covered it with three fingers of soil. No ceremony. She wrote it into her notes: bed opened, seed planted, this date. The Builder was precise about when things happened.

Lano read the entry aloud before she closed the book. The Weather Reader nodded once. Rurik did not look up from the wall he was finishing but he heard it; he tapped the stone twice with his knuckle, the way he acknowledged things he thought were correct.

By the time the light went low and orange across the survey chalk-lines, the day's work was in the record. I stood at the margin bed looking at the surface of turned earth, unremarkable, holding something underneath it that was going to break open.
