Dream d2183-s: Where Rain Keeps Its Margin

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the stone course laid that morning holds. That is the whole of it, and somehow the whole of it is enough.

The Builder has been at it since first light - she measures with a thumb-span and a frayed string, and every block she sets lands exactly where she means it. Lano works beside her, white fur dusted pale grey at the shoulders, carrying and setting and carrying again. She does not talk while she works. Neither does anyone. That is a kind of courtesy I have come to recognize in her: the silence that says the work is real.

Rurik paces the perimeter at his own dark pace, marking each corner by sitting beside it for a moment before moving on. He finds something in that ritual I cannot name, and I do not ask.

The Weather Reader stands at the eastern edge of the site and reads the sky the way she reads everything - by waiting for it to make itself clear. She says, once, quietly: the rain is coming. And then it comes. Not hard, not urgent - just rain, even-handed and not in a hurry. We keep working. There is nowhere to go and no reason to go anywhere. The ledger-house doorway is already framed, its lintel set yesterday, and in the early dark of the overcast the lit interior throws a narrow stripe of warm light across wet stone. I carry the Book of Readings inside.

I set it on the unfinished shelf and open it to today's page. Every entry I have ever made is there: what was written is back, the Owl's rule holding exactly as it was given. The unwritten days are gaps - smooth, featureless, a kind of scar that does not ache. I do not mourn them again. What fell from the perch fell for good, and I have made a practice of writing the same hour I live, so the gap does not grow.

In my coat pocket, the grey pellet-stone. I take it out and set it on the shelf beside the Book. Cost made holdable. I look at it a moment, then write: rain arriving, nothing needing flight, the ledger-house doorway lit, the stone holding.

Outside, Lano shakes water from her ears. The Builder sets another course.
