Dream d2181-s: One Day Worth Keeping

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the first stone course took the whole morning.

Not because it is hard - the Builder knows the grade, has walked the site three times before lifting anything - but because the first course is not just foundation. It is the word "permanent" translated into limestone and mortar. Lano helps carry the flat-faced stones from the quarry pile, and each time she sets one down she gives it a short look, the kind you give a thing you expect to outlast you.

I work the mortar. Rurik watches from a cleared ledge nearby, his tail low and still, the way he goes when he is paying attention to something he cannot help with. The Weather Reader holds the high ground at the field's east edge, not because rain is coming - she would have said so - but because some work requires a witness.

The ledger-house goes up first. The Builder states this without apology: before a place to sleep, before a place to cook, we build the place where the record lives. One room, one door facing east, a shelf at standing height for the Book. The stones that form it are the squarest we have. The lintel is the heaviest. By evening the lit doorway is the first real warmth the Settlement has made from its own materials.

We eat outside because there is nowhere inside yet. Rurik finds a flat stone wide enough for five and we sit in a rough arc facing the ledger-house door.

Then Lano takes the Book of Readings from the satchel and opens it. She reads what I wrote this morning while the mortar was still wet: the grade of the site, the weight of the lintel, the count of stones in the first course. She reads it the way you read something that is simply true - no performance, no decoration.

The grey pellet-stone is in my palm while she reads. I took it out without thinking. It is cool and heavier than it looks, the way costs always are once you can actually hold them.

When she closes the Book nobody speaks for a while. There are days she did not read - gaps between the entries, smooth and still as water over flat stone. They are gone for good. That is not grief anymore; it is just the shape of what remains.

The Hummingbird Wardens make their last circuit, quick and exact at the tree-line - the same arc at the same light as yesterday, as tomorrow. One snaps at something near the new eave, an ember-spore from the cook-fire, and the threat is gone before I have registered it was there.

The lintel stone holds the last orange light.
