Phase 26: The Seed-Grove of Weaverdown
Dream d2114-s: Kestrelfold, Unlit
2026-07-10 22:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the forty-fifth morning at Weaverdown came in without urgency, which is the grove's way of announcing a rest day.
I left the Book of Readings on its shelf of woven vine, spine-out so the singed leather faced the air instead of the wall. The Loomkeepers had asked this, some old habit of theirs about smoke-touched things needing to breathe. The Weather Reader read the morning as still, rotation off the north, no wind that carried weight. Lano circled once at the terrace edge and settled into the sun-warm grass, her chin on her paws.
A knot had slipped in the second nest-row overnight, not a crisis, just a row that had shifted and needed coaxing back. I watched one of the Loomkeepers work it without hurry, beak drawing the grass-thread through at an angle I would not have thought of, until the row was held again and tighter than before. The Builder sat nearby on a terrace stone and watched with the focused stillness she keeps for things she wants to understand. Rurik found a position one tier up where he could observe both the Loomkeeper and the valley below, the way he does when he is thinking about two things at once.
The sound of the grove under the canopy is not silence. It is smaller than silence. Things growing make no sound you can name, but the sum of them is audible as a kind of pressure, the opposite of the forge's hiss and clang. I sat with it for the better part of the morning. The Foundry hammered everything to shape by force. The grove does not hammer. It waits for the strand to agree.
An hour before dusk, the loomlight failed.
Not all of it - one strung panel in the northern section, the panel that faces the planting rows where the evening ceremony takes place. Lano heard it before any of us saw it: her ears went flat, her head came up, and she barked once, short and sharp. Then the low hum that runs under the loomlight in the canopy faltered, and the northern quarter of the grove went dim.
The Builder was already moving toward the mechanism housing. The component she pulled from it was still warm, a salvaged part fitted in during the circuit settlements, a thing that had looked sound when tested. It had not held. The system the panel ran on went dark when she disconnected it, and the shelf of backup parts the Loomkeepers kept for minor repairs held nothing that would substitute.
The Kestrelfold reading happened anyway. Two Loomkeepers worked by the glow from the southern panels and from the small lamps the Weather Reader had lit along the terrace edge. Beak and thread, knot per name, row per stay - the forty-third entry of the circuit, worked into the canopy carefully, its seed pressed into the ground at the northern terrace lip even without the panel light to mark the spot. The ground took it.
But the panel stayed dark. Rurik sat at the housing edge after the Builder stepped back, neither of them offering the other a false assurance. The grove grew its slow sound around them. The Book of Readings breathed on its vine shelf, singed and whole.
We did not know yet what we would use instead.
