Dream d2111-s: What the Grove Cannot Grow

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where grove day forty-two ran long into the amber hour, the Loomkeepers at their highest nest-rows, threading the Slatewharf name into the canopy with a patience that made watching them feel like reading.

I had the Book open in my lap - that familiar weight, the singed spine rough under my thumb where the fire had caught it - and I was writing in the margin, something I had been working toward since we arrived: the grove is a ledger you can stand under. Not a record kept behind glass. A ledger you breathe in.

The Builder sat on the terrace step, watching a Loomkeeper stake a seedling in the soft earth with a split reed, exactly where the Builder said she would once have driven a steel brace. No word came from the Loomkeeper. Only the motion: press nothing, guide only, the reed flexing without snapping. After a while the Builder reached for the next seedling and tried it herself, and I heard the soft sound of it going in.

The Hummingbird Wardens made their evening pass at the moment they always do, the amber-to-violet seam of light that any of us could now predict without checking. Three darts through the east row, the snap of a wing-pivot at the canopy edge, then gone south on the circuit. On time, as always.

The Starling Chorus crossed the canopy in one long pour and said: "Fuel stores low. The ranging will be needed." It said it once and wheeled away, a single shape folding into the treeline.

Lano heard it before any of us moved. Her ears went flat, her head swung toward the east hedge, nose working the air. A short, hard bark - not alarm, but its near edge. I set my hand on her back and felt her hold the alert without releasing it.

The Weather Reader had her instruments on the terrace stone. "Not wind," she said quietly. "Not weather. The settlement's own belly." Fuel low, salvage bins stripped at the near sites. The grove cannot smelt or refuel. It can teach our hands patience, but the ranging is ours to plan.

Rurik came in from the east path, coat dark against the loomlight. "Further than last circuit," he said. "The close salvage is gone." No report yet, only the new distance that had to be named before it could be crossed.

At dusk the Loomkeepers read the Slatewharf entry into the canopy: one beak, one grass-thread, one name per deed. Entry forty of the circuit. The seed went into the terrace soil and the grove did not change. Only what grows in it changes.

I added a second line in the Book's margin, under the first: what the grove cannot grow, it holds us steady while we go and find.
