Dream d2099-s: The Asking Hold

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the morning came in sideways through the canopy and the light lay in green-gold bars across the terraces. Day thirty. Nothing had changed: the nest-rows hung exactly as they had the day before, and the day before that. But something in the posture of the Loomkeepers said today would be a small different, the only kind the grove makes room for.

The Builder had been watching them since first light. She said nothing for a long while, and then: "They're not securing it. They're asking it to hold." She meant a strand of grass-thread pressed into the lattice at the upper terrace, no knot yet, the Loomkeeper's beak curved around it with a patience I could not match. I had seen the Builder brace crossbeams with three bolts where one would do. Now she watched grass hold what she might have welded, and she was quiet in a way I did not know from her.

Lano found the threshold stone again. She circled it twice, nose working, then sat with her tail flat and ears tilted toward the nest-rows. Rurik appeared from somewhere in the terraces and settled beside her, his dark coat against the grey stone. They watched without needing to discuss it.

The Weather Reader called the morning mild, pressure steady, a south-east wind arriving before afternoon. She reads the air the way the grove reads history: without ceremony.

After the midday quiet I opened the Book to a blank margin. The spine crinkled at the crease where the heat had reached it, singed but not broken. I wrote: the grove is a ledger you can stand under. I felt the smallness of that as a true thing.

Late afternoon, a Loomkeeper staked a seedling into the terrace at the spot where the Builder had offered three days ago to shore a tilting post. The stake was a single rod of stripped grass, angled at the same lean as the seedling. The Builder watched and did not offer anything. That was a kind of learning too.

At dusk the Starling Chorus wheeled above the canopy, caught the loomlight going orange, and called: "Ospreycrossing. Entry twenty-eight. The circuit continues." Then it was gone.

The Loomkeepers moved to the reading-row. Beak to thread, name to knot, knot to row, they read Ospreycrossing into the canopy the way they always read. The seed went into the ground after, pressed into the base of the west terrace. Day thirty. The ledger gains one line, and you can stand under all of it.
