Dream d2087-s: Cinderwharf Goes Into the Ground
2026-07-09 00:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the loomlight came gold through the canopy and the Loomkeepers were already at work before any of us had spoken a word.
Day eighteen in the grove and I know the rhythm of it now. The terraces hold their green in quiet layers, each planting placed by patience, never pressed. I sat at the edge of the upper tier with the Book of Readings open across my knees - its spine still dark at the corner where the Foundry fire caught it, the pages whole, every margin intact - and I wrote in the narrow white edge beside an old entry: the grove is a ledger you can stand under.
The Builder watched a Loomkeeper stake a seedling along the south terrace wall. She crouched to see the work more closely, her hands loose at her sides. Where she would once have reached for a brace, a pin, some mechanism to hold the thing upright by force, she only watched the bird press the stake gently into the earth with its beak, a nudge, a persuasion. She said nothing. After a moment she sat down in the dirt beside the terrace wall the way you sit when you have decided to stay.
Lano padded the length of the row beside her, nose low, tail moving once - a slow arc of approval - and then she curled herself at the Builder's knee and settled.
Rurik came up from the lower terrace with the Weather Reader, both of them carrying the particular quiet of people who have just compared notes and found them matching. He said the blight wind that troubled the west hedge yesterday had turned fully. She had felt it in the shift of pressure before dawn. Good news, arrived from two directions.
As the light began to go amber the Starling Chorus swept once around the canopy in a single dark shape and called out: "Cinderwharf. Entry sixteen. The reading begins." Then it rose and did not return.
The Loomkeepers gathered at the east row. I carried the Book to them and opened it to the Cinderwharf entry - the settlement of the river bend, the first forge-village on the circuit, the place where the party learned that repair and ruin share the same tool. A Loomkeeper drew the first thread through its beak and began to knot. Name by name, stay by stay, the canopy received what the Book had held. Beak and grass-thread only. No ink, no voice, nothing forced.
When it was done one Loomkeeper took the small labeled packet of the Cinderwharf seed from the grove's keeping-pouch and pressed it into the earth below the new row. The terrace absorbed it without ceremony.
The Weather Reader set her hand briefly on the spine of the Book where the fire had been. We all understood that as the thing it was.
