Dream d2068-s: The Ghost-Path Inward
2026-07-07 16:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Hummingbird Wardens gave us our compass.
They flew the same circuit at the same light: a dart to the north, a pause, a hard turn east, then the long glide back. The same, every pass, as exact as a gauge needle finding its mark. Rurik had been watching them since the camp broke, head low, eyes tracking each return leg. "Follow the turn," he said, without lifting his gaze from the sky. "They always correct at the same point. That point is inward."
So we followed the corrections. We walked the patrol's ghost-path, the angle of each warden's turn our only map, through the bone-grey crust where the blight-wind had spent itself and left nothing. The ash underfoot was fine as flour. The Book of Readings rode against my ribs, wrapped in the one clean cloth we had left. I could feel the stiffness at the spine where the heat had touched it, the subtle pucker of singed binding. The pages inside were whole. Every one of them. I had checked that in the dark, twice.
Above us the Starling Chorus wheeled. Not scattered, not passing through. Wheeling. One dark shape against the pale sky, turning slowly as a thought held before it becomes a word. It had been above us since the first hedgerow appeared, and the hedgerows had appeared without announcement: one, low and wind-bent, then another, and then we were walking a corridor of green on both sides and the blight-wind could not reach in. Lano noticed it first. Her nose came up, her ears went forward and stayed. She sneezed once, sharp, as if clearing ash from her lungs, and then she walked with ease, the way she did when the road ahead was worth walking.
The ground here was brown. Dark and held together.
The Weather Reader spread her hand open, palm skyward. "Cloud is moving off the wet quarter," she said. "The air breathes differently in here. Something is anchoring it."
"The canopy," the Builder said, and nodded ahead, her wrapped forearm tucked close to her side. Beyond the hedgerow corridor I could see the first gold-green glint of woven structure high in the trees: the underside of something built by beak and patience and grass-thread over years and years.
The Chorus tightened its wheel. Smaller, closer, darker. One call, short and level: "The road is clear."
We walked on.
