Dream d2056-s: Plumb Line and Timber
2026-07-06 19:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the mist had thinned to a gauze by mid-morning, and Slatewharf smelled of sawdust and iron filings. The Bridgekeeper had put us to work before we had finished our tea.
She set me to the timber yard with the Builder, who moved through the stacked planks like she was reading a library. She would press a thumb against a cut end, lean in close, then make a small mark in chalk. "This one checks," she said of a beam that looked sound to me. "Hear how it rings dull? Built wet, dried badly. Put it in a wall and in ten years the wall tells you." She set it aside without ceremony and moved to the next.
Lano had found a post in the sun and installed herself against it. Her ears tracked every hammer blow from the far end of the yard, nose sorting the air with a focus I recognized as professional.
The Weather Reader was at the testing ground at the edge of town - I had watched her go out after breakfast with her instruments and the Bridgekeeper's range-master, pacing distances, reading what the morning air did to sound and trajectory. When she came back for the midday meal her notebook was full of small, dense figures. "The mist here doesn't just sit," she told me, pressing a piece of bread. "It moves in columns. Warm from the river, cold from the stone walls. Anything you want to carry accurately through this town, you account for the columns." She tapped her page. "They know it by feel. I wanted to know why."
The Bridgekeeper watched this from across the table with something between amusement and satisfaction. She was a compact woman with chalk on her sleeve as permanent as a tattoo.
"Your dog approved the site," she said, nodding toward Lano.
"She approves of most sunny posts," I said.
"Still counts." She refilled my cup without asking.
Rurik had spent the morning on the wall that faced the road, watching the treeline. By afternoon he moved to the timber yard, picking his way between the stacks with his tail low and his amber eyes cataloguing. He paused at the rejected beam, sniffed it once, and stepped over it in a direction that meant: correct call.
I wrote in the book: Slatewharf builds to last and knows the difference. Its people measure twice not from caution but from respect for the material. The place teaches by letting you work beside it.
The hammers were still going when the light went long and gold. The Bridgekeeper had not told us to stop. We had not stopped.
