Dream d2054-s: The Square in Amber

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the streets of Slatewharf were laid in precise right angles, and I understood why on the second morning: the town had been planned, not grown. Someone had put a level to this place before the first stone went down.

We walked out from the inn while the amber light was still low and clean, the kind that precedes a storm pressing the atmosphere flat. The Weather Reader glanced at her instruments and said "three hours, maybe four" without preamble, then tucked the small device back into her coat. Lano trotted ahead, nose to the cobbles, tail a slow flag.

The Bridgekeeper found us at the north gate, or we found him - hard to say which. He was a compact man, unhurried, and named his role before we could ask. He told us the bridge over the cut had been rebuilt twice in his tenure and would need a third round before the decade was out. The Builder crouched at the near abutment and pressed her palm flat to the stone. "There," she said. "The footing settles on the downstream side. Not critical yet." The Bridgekeeper nodded as though he had suspected this for years and was relieved to find someone else suspecting it too.

We found the Mill by sound before we saw it. The Miller spoke without stopping, a running narration of grain and humidity and what dry air does to the grind. Rurik settled on a high beam and watched with amber eyes. The Miller pointed at him mid-sentence: "Your cat knows which beam bears true." He did. Rurik always does.

The Clerk of the square met us at noon, at a carved stone table in the center of the market. She kept a ledger of petitions - repairs requested, repairs deferred, repairs completed, each column clean and dated. I asked if I could see the deferred column. She turned the book without comment. I wrote three lines in my book of readings: the footing at the north bridge, a cracked leat-channel the Weather Reader had noted on the walk over, a section of the southern wall where the mortar had gone a shade past ordinary gray. The Clerk watched me write and then entered the same three facts in her own ledger, in parallel, as though we were reading the same passage aloud to each other.

Lano found a child's wooden token wedged between the paving stones near the table. She carried it to the Clerk and set it down and looked up. "Gracias," I said, to no one in particular. The Clerk placed it in a small box she kept for things the square returned to her.

We had not helped anything yet. We were still learning what there was to help.

Note

Amber light on precise streets, a bridgekeeper's warning, and a clerk's meticulous record-keeping. A sense of order amidst the mundane, a quiet confidence in the town's planning.
