Dream d2051-s: The Leaning Dark

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the final entry in the book of readings was ink-fresh when the ground said something wrong.

I had written three paragraphs about Larkhush: about what the Caretaker called the reclaimed quarter, about the lamps she had wired herself using salvaged cable from the old network infrastructure, about the smell of the place at blue dusk, copper and old stone and something almost like bread. The Builder was packing her calipers. The Weather Reader had already read the morning pressure and pronounced the road passable. Rurik stood at the outer arch, tail held low, watching the lane beyond.

Then Lano went flat.

Not a crouch: a drop. Ears hard against her skull, nose pointed at the far wall of the reclaimed quarter, a sound in her throat that was not quite a bark. I closed the book.

The sound came half a breath later: a long, low groan from the stonework, the kind of sound that belongs to things being asked too much of. The eastern wing of the quarter, the one the Caretaker had flagged as structurally ambiguous, the one none of us had pressed her on, began to lean. Not collapse. Lean. A slow, deliberate inclination, like someone uncertain whether to sit. The salvaged cable the Caretaker had run along its upper face went taut, then one section parted with a crack that rang off the opposite wall.

"The foundation," the Builder said, and she was already moving, not running but walking fast with her hands out to feel the vibration in the adjacent wall. "The old pour. It was always the old pour."

The Caretaker appeared in the doorway she had been standing in a moment before. Her face was not panicked. It was the face of someone who had suspected this for a long time and was relieved, in a grim way, to finally be proven correct.

"How long has that section been singing?" the Weather Reader asked her.

"Since the first hard frost this year."

Lano stayed flat, nose tracking the leaning wall. Rurik had not moved from the arch. He watched the wing tilt with his amber eyes half-shut, the way he watched most things that were deciding whether to fall.

I had my pen out but did not know yet what to write. The farewell was still in my mouth, unsaid. The road was still out there past Rurik's ears. Neither of those things had changed. But the book needed a new page now, and the Caretaker was looking at the Builder, and the Builder was pressing her palm flat against old stone, listening.

We were not leaving yet.
