Dream d2047-s: The Counting Wheel

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the frost on Harrowhollow's fence-posts had drawn white lines overnight, and I was the first one up.

The main street lay empty under grey first light. I walked it slowly, and Lano walked beside me, her nose low to the packed earth. She stopped near the well and stood very still. I crouched. Footprints, boot-shaped and clear, pressed deep in mud that had since frozen. Not last night's work. Weeks old at most, but not the faded kind that comes from a season back. Someone had walked this street in number, recently enough that the prints still held their edges.

I opened the book of readings and wrote: main street - traffic, estimated weeks prior, multiple individuals.

The Builder found me there. She had been up since before light herself, and she had already found something. She led me to the hamlet's edge, past the last fence and the last outbuilding, where the frost lay undisturbed on a flat stretch of ground. Stakes had been driven at measured intervals - twenty paces, forty, sixty. At each far stake, a target: wooden frames with scorched centres. She paced it out while I watched.

"Whoever set this," she said, studying a stake's driven angle, "measured before they struck. Not guesswork."

Lano sniffed the nearest target-frame and sat back on her haunches, ears up. Sosiego, I thought - the only word for what she looked like, watchful and perfectly still.

I wrote: testing ground, edge of settlement - measured paces, target frames, recent use.

The Weather Reader was at the waterwheel by the time we circled back. The wheel turned in the millrace, slow and steady, though the miller's house sat dark. She stood at the channel gate watching grain sacks on the wheel's loading shelf lift and lower, one by one, as though the mechanism had a morning routine to complete on its own terms.

"It is set to check weight," she said, not turning. "Each load passes over the counter before it clears." She held her barometer at arm's length, reading the air. "Pressure dropped two millibars overnight. Something is moving this way."

I wrote it all down. Footprints. Measured ground. A wheel accounting for itself in an empty yard.

Rurik appeared on the mill-house gatepost, amber eyes tracking the wheel's turn. He watched each loaded shelf rise and fall with the expression of someone who already knows the sum and is only waiting for the rest of us to catch up.

Harrowhollow was not empty. It had only been waiting for a reading careful enough to deserve an answer.
