Dream d2040-s: Lanterns in Low Fog
2026-07-05 16:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the fog came in low off the fields before we reached the gate, and Ospreygreen's lanterns held themselves above it like candles on water.
The village announced itself slowly. First the smell - woodsmoke and something mineral, lime or kiln-clay, and beneath that a quieter note the Weather Reader named without being asked.
"Moist air sitting still," she said. "This place traps humidity in the commons. Notice the lantern-poles - they've pitched them high. Whoever laid this out knew the fog line."
She had her barometric glass out before we passed the first fieldstone marker.
The gate was timber and iron, unlatched, set back on good stone piers. Not a fortress gate - a village gate, meaning: we know who lives here and you are not yet among us. I wrote in the book of readings: threshold type - civic, not defensive.
Lano went first through the gap, nose sweeping the ground ahead, then sat just inside and looked back. Not warning. Invitation. I followed her.
The commons was wider than the road had suggested: a proper square with a well at center, lanterns at all four corners, and the buildings arranged around it with the settled confidence of things argued over and resolved generations ago. The hall occupied the north face, larger than its neighbors. Workshops lined the east. Quiet dwellings to the west, shutters still drawn. A village that had arranged itself into a solved problem.
The Builder walked the square's edge while Rurik took the well-kerb and cleaned his paw.
"Good joinery on the hall," the Builder said. "Beam-ends proud of the wall by about three fingers. They wanted air through the timber. Someone was thinking about rot."
"From here?" I said.
"I can see they were thinking about it," she said. "Whether they solved it I'll need to look at later."
Rurik moved from the well to the hall's threshold and walked its length slowly, then settled at the far corner. Lano trotted to him. She sniffed the step, circled once, and lay down facing the commons with her chin on her forepaws.
"She's settled," the Weather Reader said.
"Tranquilo," I said to Lano. Her tail swept the stone once.
We found the inn at the south face and took rooms above the kitchen, where warmth came up through the floorboards. I set the book of readings open on the window sill and looked out at the fog and the lanterns above it.
Day one of five. First impressions: a solved place, holding still. We would see if that held.
