Dream d2037-s: Willowbarrow at First Grey
2026-07-05 11:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road climbed the last low ridge before dawn finished deciding what kind of day it would be, and Willowbarrow appeared below us in the grey: a ring of stone buildings arranged around a central square, rooflines intact, fences still standing, frost laid over everything like a sheet that hadn't been pulled back in a long time.
Rurik stopped at the crest and sat. He looked down at the settlement for a full minute before he moved again. That was how he marked a threshold worth respecting.
The Weather Reader unslung her barometer case and made a reading without being asked. "Pressure's been steady here for days," she said. "Cold, but nothing moving through. Like the air decided to wait."
We took the slope carefully, the road firm under frost-hardened mud. Lano moved ahead of us through the gate - a timber frame still plumb in its stone posts, which told the Builder something before she'd said a word. She ran her gloved hand along the hinge-pin and looked at it the way she always looks at things that were made to last and then weren't maintained enough to prove it.
"Someone knew what they were doing when they put this up," she said. "Someone else decided knowing was enough."
The central square was clean. That surprised me. Leaves at the margins, yes, and moss filling the joins between pavestones, but the square itself was clear as if someone still swept it out of habit or obligation, one of those tasks that outlasts its reason. I wrote that down in the book of readings: the square is still swept.
The halls around it were dark. No lamp in any window we could see.
Lano nosed along the base of the nearer building, tail moving slowly, ears forward. She found something under the overhang - a small stone, pale, almost round - and carried it a few steps before setting it down and looking back at me. I didn't know what she meant by it. I wrote that down too.
We found a room in the least-damaged hall, a side structure whose roof had held. Rurik walked the perimeter of our room before he let any of us settle. Then he sat in the doorway and watched the square with amber patience while we laid out our gear and the Weather Reader recorded her reading in her own notebook and I sat by the frosted window with mine.
First impression of Willowbarrow: orderly. Built by people who believed in arrangement. Quiet in the way of a place that has been quiet long enough to forget it was ever anything else.
Tomorrow we would read it properly. Tonight we let it read us first.
