Dream d2030-s: The City's Own Reading

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the fog had not lifted by the time we settled at the long table, and the windows of Ospreycrossing made warm squares in the grey.

The Lamplighter arrived first, setting down a pot and pulling back a chair without ceremony. The Gate Archivist came next, still carrying a ledger but setting it aside when the Builder made a small gesture toward it - not a reprimand, just a reminder that the morning did not ask for work. The Night Foreman came last, smelling of lamp oil and cold stone. Rurik tracked her entrance from the doorway before circling twice and settling under the bench near my feet.

We had spent six days reading this city. This morning we set down the instruments.

The Lamplighter talked first: about her rounds, the order she walked them, why the eastern quarter always got the last light - not for lack of resources but for a reason tangled up in a founding argument nobody alive fully remembered. The Gate Archivist corrected a detail. The Lamplighter shrugged and amended. This was how the city carried its own history - corrected in passing, never written cleanly.

The Weather Reader asked whether the fog came off the river or off the plains. The Night Foreman said that depended entirely on the season and also on how the upper district vented its overnight heat, and then they were into it together - two people comparing instruments, one with a barometer and one with forty years of walking the same circuit in the dark.

The Builder listened and wrote nothing. I could see her noting the structure of what was said anyway: which parts of the city each of them loved, and what the Lamplighter had quietly repaired three times without filing a report because the report would have taken longer than the repair.

Lano had settled against the Lamplighter's ankle. She did not move even when the Gate Archivist laughed at something and the bench shifted.

"You read a place by looking at it," the Gate Archivist said at some point, gesturing at my book. "We read it by having been stuck in it."

I wrote that down.

The fog thinned toward midday. Outside, the city made its ordinary sounds. We had one day left before the road called us forward, and I had learned something in that morning that no measuring tool could have reached: the city's idea of itself, which was generous and slightly inaccurate and deeply held.

Lano yawned once and tucked her nose under her paw. Tranquila.
