Dream d2006-s: Warm Windows Behind Us
2026-07-03 08:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the river mist had come up overnight and Umberstead wore it like a second coat, soft and grey at the edges, the thatch barely visible from the yard. I was up before the others, adding the last lines to the book of readings by the light of a borrowed tallow candle.
The Crofter found me there. She said nothing at first, just set a cup of something warm beside the inkwell, then stood reading over my shoulder the way people do when they are trying to see themselves in a mirror they did not ask for. I read aloud what I had written: that the mill race needed clearing on the south bend, that the cellar lintel would hold another decade if the crack were pointed before autumn, that the hamlet's quiet was productive rather than despairing. She nodded at each line.
The Builder came down next, already carrying her pack. She had spent the previous evening cutting a timber splice for the granary step - a thing the Crofter had not asked for but clearly needed. "It will hold," she said to the Crofter, and that was her farewell.
Lano was at the gate before any of us. She had been out in the mist and came back with wet paws and a small flat stone, grey and river-smoothed, carried carefully in her mouth. She set it down at my feet, pequeña and purposeful, and looked up.
The Weather Reader checked her instruments at the edge of the yard, reading the morning pressure with two fingers held to the glass. "Steady," she said. "Mist burns off by mid-morning. Good walking."
I closed the book. The Crofter's eldest was watching from the upstairs window, and I raised my hand to him. He raised his back.
Rurik was already past the last house. He moved through the grey without ceremony, as he always does at a threshold - not lingering, not rushing, just placing himself on the road as though the road were already his. We followed in order, the mist closing softly behind us.
I looked back once. Umberstead's windows were warm and rectangular in the pale dark, lit from inside with whatever the day's beginning held for people who would stay. One lamp burned steadier than the others, in the mill house.
We had not made it better, exactly. We had read it truly. That was the difference the book was meant to carry forward.
The road ran north into the lightening fog, and we had no name yet for where it led.
